This is a follow-up to Chuck’s great article, Battle of the Stoves, of which he really likes the Folding Firebox Nano Ultralight. I have to say I like it as well, but especially after doing my own little comparison to the Vargo Hexagon Wood Burning Stove and a discovery with the U.S. Canteen Cup.
I had no intention of doing a review as I am not a big stove person anyway. I do however appreciate them when traveling and when time is of the essence. Great for a hot meal too when paddling.
Anyway, the Firebox Nano smoked (pun intended) the Vargo Hexagon in wood burning using the canteen cup to boil water, primarily due to its open nature allowing for more air. When testing with an alcohol burner, the Vargo won as it offered better wind protection.
That is until I thought outside the box, Firebox that is… This may not make sense unless you own a Firebox, but is recommended you use these nano sticks for placing your alcohol burner on — to raise it closer to your pot which sits on the intended stand (see above).
Well it turns out a U.S. Canteen Cup fits in between the uprights. By placing the alcohol burner at the bottom of the stove (see above) it offered the perfect wind screen. Another advantage to Firebox Nano.
